India and Pakistan gain their independence from Great Britain.

1947- 1948

The First Kashmir War is fought between India and Pakistan. The war ends with India controlling about two-thirds of Kashmir and Pakistan controlling the remainder of the territory.

1950-1953

Pakistan declares its ‘full support’ for all United Nations actions and for the United States’ war effort in the Korean War. However, it turns down a United States request to send troops to join the war.

1954

The United States and Pakistan enter into a Mutual Defense Assistance Agreement, thus initiating the process towards an alliance between the two countries.
